Position SummaryThis position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). It may be responsible for covering multiple locations. The role involves the collection and receipt of biological specimens into the department, proper entry into the company's computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and distribution of specimens to the appropriate analytical area.
Responsibilities include pre- and post-analytical testing aspects and performing specified analytical testing as assigned. The position follows the Code of Conduct and performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and applicable professional standards.
1. Specimen collection, general laboratory specimen processing, or referral laboratory processing. Ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity using appropriate techniques for all age criteria. In IOP locations, managing client relationships within compliance regulations to meet client needs and Sonora Quests' business objectives.
2. Entering and verifying patient demographics, location, physician data, tests requested, time and date of collection, appropriate clinical information, and all other pertinent data found on requisitions and computer-generated orders for processing and billing. Verifying accuracy of entered information and appropriateness of specimens received. Ali quoting and labeling specimens according to established departmental procedures, delivering specimens to the technical area in a timely manner, and/or performing initial processing and preparation of samples for transport.
May assist in monitoring workflow and training of new employees.
3. Focus on quality by ensuring all work performed is accurate and complete. Completing documents legibly and accurately per site protocol. Following established methods and practices. Maintaining familiarity with departmental procedures. Using appropriate documentation to record communications. Initiating computer-generated reports as required for patient reporting and quality assurance monitoring. Meeting departmental standards for productivity and quality as currently defined. Actively participating and providing input to the department/system via committees or Six Sigma teams.
Maintaining acceptable specimen rejection rates and meeting departmental standards for productivity and quality.
4. Participating in departmental financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies and materials, avoiding excessive waste, and participating in initiatives to reduce costs and improve service. Basic knowledge of billing and commitment to an error-free work environment.
5. Communicating courteously and professionally with internal and external customers. Interacting with co-workers with an emphasis on teamwork and customer service. Ability to work all areas, departments, and shifts as assigned. Resolving basic service issues. Attending meetings and staying current with internal/external communications, e.g., e‑mail, newsletters.
6. Acknowledging and understanding the importance of patient rights and privacy (HIPAA).
