Unit Information:

The Adult Critical Care Unit at Tucson Medical Center is a 28 bed unit that was recognized with a gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. The Beacon Award for Excellence — a significant milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and healthy work environments — recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards.

The gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence signifies excellent and sustained unit performance and patient outcomes. TMC’s Adult Critical Care Unit earned a gold award by meeting the following evidence-based Beacon Award for Excellence criteria:

  • Appropriate Staffing and Staff Engagement
  • Effective Communication, Knowledge Management, Learning and Development
  • Evidence-Based Practice and Processes
  • Outcome Measurement

This unit includes three areas:

Unit 450:

This is a 16 bed unit providing care for critically ill patients with a variety of neuro, surgical (general, neuro and vascular) and other medical problems. TMC is a comprehensive stroke center so unit focuses on neurological and neuro-surgical disorders utilizing certified neuro nurses. This unit also includes patients that are post code requiring target temperature management, CRRT, Ventriculostomies and EKOS.

Staff utilizes a supportive and collaborative approach to interactions with the patients and their families. All staff are CPR and ACLS certified. Other certifications include FCCS, CCRN and CNRN.

Unit 480:

This is a 12 bed Cardiac Intensive Critical Care. TMC has the busiest heart program in southern Arizona that recovers generally 2-4 open hearts five days per week (CABG, AVR, MVR, TVR, TAVR). Our patient population consists of open hearts, TAVR’s, thoracotomies, MI's, IABP, Impella, CRRT, swans, sepsis, post codes, unstable heart blocks, unstable cardiac patients, post pacemakers, post lead extractions, heart failure, patients requiring vasopressors, intubated patients,vascularsurgeriesand EKOS.

All staff is CPR and ACLS certified. Other certifications include FCCS, CCRN, CSC and CMC.

Unit 470:

This unit is an 8 bed overflow.

Job Description

Reports to the ICU Nurse Manager and supports the day-to-day operations of the Cardiovascular and Neuro-Medical Intensive Care Units. Provides direct supervision for Central Monitoring and the Rapid Response Team. Assists in managing staffing, patient flow, and daily clinical operations to ensure quality, safety, and efficiency. Serves as a clinical resource to frontline staff and supports the implementation of departmental initiatives aligned with organizational goals.

Collaborates closely with the ICU Nurse Manager to enhance team performance, staff engagement, and patient outcomes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Associate’s degree in Nursing required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of relevant nursing experience with mastery of RN role and competencies for assigned area, evidence of leadership, teaching and interpersonal skills, and documentation of professional development.
