Overview

University Animal Care (UAC), at the University of Arizona, is in search of a Veterinarian. The incumbent reports to the Director and provides preventive health care and clinical veterinary support for a diverse range of laboratory and agricultural species used in research and teaching. Responsibilities include consultation with investigators on animal models, anesthetic and analgesic regimens, and IACUC protocol development and review.

The position also contributes to training in animal care and use, veterinary student instruction, and represents the animal care program on relevant university committees. As part of the veterinary leadership team, the incumbent participates in management decisions and supports the university's mission in teaching, research, and service.

UAC manages multiple centralized animal facilities at the University of Arizona and oversees the campus‑wide animal care and use program. UAC provides assistance to scientists, physicians, staff, and students who have received Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval to perform research, testing, or educational studies on animal subjects. UAC ensures humane and appropriate animal care and use by providing for the animals' daily needs, veterinary care, and monitoring the use of the animals by principal investigators, technical personnel, and students.

Responsibilities

Clinical Veterinary Medicine
  • Provide comprehensive clinical care for laboratory and agricultural animals in collaboration with other UAC veterinarians and technical staff.
  • Conduct clinical rounds, participate in the emergency on‑call rotation (including weekends, evenings, and holidays), and assist with coordination of coverage schedules to ensure continuous veterinary care.
  • Maintain and update standard operating procedures related to clinical medicine and husbandry.
  • Contribute to large animal experimental surgery, agricultural program support, and other UAC initiatives as assigned.
Training and Researcher Support
  • Deliver training for research and technical staff in procedures such as compound administration, surgical techniques, and novel model development.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with the research community to ensure animal care and use needs are met in accordance with institutional and regulatory standards.
IACUC Support
  • Collaborate with researchers by providing veterinary consultation on animal model selection, anesthesia and analgesia, humane techniques, and protocol development.
  • Serve as a veterinary reviewer for IACUC protocols. Participate in IACUC meetings, facility inspections and program reviews.
Service, Teaching and Research
  • Participate in departmental, university and professional service, which may take many forms.
  • Participate in UAC seminars, AALAS certification training, technical training of investigators and students, and veterinary student clinical rotations.
  • Pursue scholarly activities that build upon professional and scientific interests and areas of expertise, to include independent or collaborative research.
Departmental Leadership
  • Participate in the UAC Management Team. Participate in document preparation and site visits for AAALAC accreditation and other regulatory agencies.
  • Provide direction to veterinary and husbandry technical staff and students.
