OverviewWe are hiring engineers to work across the breadth of our Ubuntu Engineering organization, designing and engineering new software, as well as packaging, integrating, testing and shipping the Ubuntu repositories.
Key teams- Foundations
: architectures, package managers, compilers, tool chains, bootloaders, file systems, core utilities. - Server
: design, evolution and future of Ubuntu Server distribution. - Desktop
: drive Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Core Desktop, WSL, gaming tech, and Flutter apps. - LXC
: maintenance and health of the Ubuntu archive (major open source repository).
- Development
: design, build, ship new foundational systems in Rust, Go, Flutter, Python. - Architecture
: integration of open source from firmware to cloud. - Packaging
:
Debian and Snap packaging for distribution. - Automation
: build & test machinery. - Distro Engineering
: maintenance & evolution of Linux distribution.
- Design, build and ship software in Rust, Go, Python.
- Package, integrate, test and upload open source to Ubuntu repositories.
- Debug system‑level issues and deliver robust solutions.
- Author and improve technical and community documentation.
- Contribute to upstream and related open source projects.
- Collaborate in a globally distributed team.
- Mentor colleagues, build skills and understanding.
- Improve processes to fulfill our goals more efficiently.
- Exceptional academic record (high school & university).
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or compelling alternative path.
- Drive and track record of exceeding expectations.
- Passion for open source software.
- Significant experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter or C/C++.
- Professional written and spoken English.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to travel twice a year for company events up to two weeks each.
- Experience with Linux distributions and distribution engineering.
- Software packaging and distribution mechanisms.
- Build systems and tool chains, including cross‑compilation.
- Performance or security engineering experience.
- Remote work environment with twice‑yearly team sprints in person.
