Mechanical Process Engineer – Professional Career
We are searching for a Mechanical Process Engineer. This position can be performed in either our Tullahoma, TN or Farmington Hills, MI offices.
As part of Amentum’s Engineering and Information Technology group, you will collaborate with industry experts to develop solutions to mission‑critical challenges across aerospace, defense, automotive, and energy sectors. Projects include wind tunnels, rocket test stands, climate chambers, jet engine test cells, and nuclear facilities for clients such as NASA, U.S. Air Force, and automotive manufacturers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Lead project teams to develop new designs for process systems supporting automotive and aerospace research and test facilities.
- Own the technical schedule and budget performance of assigned work.
- Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate engineering work, selecting or adapting techniques, procedures, and criteria.
- Apply sound engineering principles to analyze features and work.
- Review results from assigned tasks and from junior engineers to verify completeness, correctness, and proper documentation.
- Develop technical reports and presentations for project management and clients.
- Formally check the work of others for completeness.
- Work closely with structural, machine‑design, controls, instrumentation, and aerodynamics/fluid‑dynamics engineers.
- Specify and size piping/ducting components, compressors, pumps, fans, valves, flow‑measurement, and fluid‑conditioning equipment.
- Design high‑pressure cryogenic, pneumatic, high‑temperature steam, refrigeration, vacuum, fuel, and specialty HVAC systems.
- Support project managers and senior engineers in ongoing design efforts.
- Participate in internal and external meetings, design reviews with team members and clients.
- Gather information, interview stakeholders, perform studies, calculations, and prepare rough layouts and sketches.
- Provide installation support and supervision, working with suppliers, subcontractors, and other trades.
- Create engineering calculations, specifications, and oversee the creation of engineering drawings.
- Travel as needed for design reviews, factory acceptance testing, construction activities, startup/commissioning, and proposal development.
- Work independently and as part of a multi‑disciplinary team to meet project budgets and schedules.
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited engineering school.
- Minimum 5 years of engineering experience, or 2–3 years of experience with an M.S. degree.
- Prior design experience with process systems preferred.
- Self‑motivated and able to work collaboratively and independently.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Knowledge of common process piping systems and strong mechanical and process engineering analytical skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication, strong organizational approach, and ethical values.
- US citizenship required for portions of the assigned work due to federal requirements.
- Experience managing scope, schedule, and budget of individual projects.
- Design experience including layout of process drawings and specifications.
- Knowledge of ASME B31.1, B31.3, and ASME B&PV Code.
- Knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid flow (compressible and in compressible), thermal sciences, and process systems.
- Software experience preferred:
AutoCAD, Auto Pipe, Caesar II, Mathcad, Creo, AFT. - FE/EIT certification and/or prior DOE, DoD, NASA, or test‑facility experience considered advantages.
Travel to project sites and occasional field work may be required.
