Job Summary Under general direction, inspects structures to ensure compliance with the adopted building and zoning codes and ordinances, and verifies mechanical and plumbing inspection activities by performing the following duties.# #

** All candidates conditionally offered transfer, promotion or initial hiring into a DOT/safety-sensitive position shall submit to testing for drugs and alcohol and test negative before performing any job functions that are safety-sensitive or require a CDL. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
* Perform on site structural, mechanical, and plumbing inspections of buildings while under construction, repair, and alteration.
* Inspect footings and foundations, framing, and completion to ensure compliance with regulations pertaining to structural soundness, proper materials, safety hazards, and zoning.
* Participate with office personnel in the issuance of building permits.
* Investigate complaints of zoning violations and assist in the prosecution of such cases.
* Confer with contractors, workmen, and others pertaining to problems.
* Correspond with contractors pertaining to the inspection program.
* Interpret International Codes, commercial building and one and two family building codes. Examine commercial and residential blueprints.
* Advise adjacent municipalities on establishing inspection programs.
* Check zoning clearance permits periodically and clears with Zoning Board of Adjustment.

Skill in:
* Application of principles of construction inspection

Knowledge of:
* Materials, methods, and techniques used in all major types of building construction, possible defects and faults in building construction and corrective measures
* Codes and regulations pertaining to building construction
* Departmental policies and procedures

Ability to:
* Read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints quickly and accurately and to compare them with construction in progress
* Enforce regulations with firmness, tact, and impartiality
* Establish and maintain effective relationships with contractor, property owners, and the public
* Organize and present facts and opinions clearly and concisely
* Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence
* Speak effectively before groups of constituents/property owners  or employees of organization
* Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
* Deal with problems that might involve substantial  variables in and the ability to research the appropriate solutions.#
