Middle School Social Studies Teacher

Position Status: Full Time
Classification: Exempt

Summary

The VCS Middle School Social Studies Teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing an appropriate instructional program in a secondary learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic and spiritual potential.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning in the subject of social studies.
  • Develop schemes of work, lesson plans and tests that are in accordance with established procedures.
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
  • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.
  • Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school.
  • Provide appropriate feedback on work.
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching techniques.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of student’s progress and development.
  • Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies and school regulations.
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Prepare classroom for class activities.
  • Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.
  • Observe and evaluate student’s performance and development.
  • Assign and grade classwork, homework, tests and assignments.
  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information from parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
  • Participate in professional development and activities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • 2 years of experience, preferred.
  • Oklahoma State certification.
  • Native English speaker (or) the capacity to successfully pass a TOEFL Exam with instructional proficiency.
  • Good communication, problem‑solving, and priority‑setting skills as well as maintaining an overall positive and professional attitude / disposition.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and implement educational activities.
  • Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
Essential Job Functions

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, squatting, crawling, stooping, walking, and the ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity with the use of hands, fingers to feel objects, tools and controls.
  • Vision: sighted with color, peripheral, near and far vision.
  • Hearing and speaking.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
