Position Summary
Primarily responsible for inspections of commercial food establishments, institutional facilities, and manufactured food facilities to prevent fraud, adulteration, and misrepresentation in the processing, packaging, storage, distribution, and sale of food and food products. Educates operators on applicable laws, samples products to verify safety controls, labeling, and contents, and issues written notices, letters, and reports citing violations and enforcement actions. Provides food safety education to internal and external stakeholders.
EssentialJob Functions
- Conduct physical inspections and use compliance review procedures; collect samples or data, operate field testing equipment, and perform interpretive analyses.
- Prepare technical and non‑technical reports and maintain records of investigative activities.
- Prepare documentation for review prior to submission to state or federal agencies.
- Evaluate food processing facilities for safety and defense; assist operators with labeling and technologies.
- Provide food safety instruction on hygiene and sanitation methods.
- Investigate complaints, write enforcement letters, and submit related documentation to agencies.
- Recommend remedial actions and enforce compliance measures such as warnings, fines, license suspensions, or closure.
- Interpret regulations and ordinances to determine compliance or corrective measures.
- Offer technical assistance to industry, community groups, and others regarding environmental health programs.
- Review plans for proposed facilities and aid epidemiological investigations.
- Complete required training and support public health emergency operations.
- Assist with food safety program orientation to medical and nursing students.
- Bachelor’s degree in physical, natural, or biological science, public health, environmental health, or related field (required); minimum 30 semester hours in relevant sciences.
- No prior experience required.
- Skills:
critical thinking, problem‑solving, oral and written communication, active listening, negotiation, and proficiency with audio‑visual equipment. - Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
- Registered or eligible for registration as a Sanitarian or Environmental Specialist; must pass Sanitarian‑in‑Training examination and complete required training.
- Maintain confidentiality per HIPAA and THD record regulations.
- Willing to travel and respond to emergencies within an hour.
- Adhere to state registration and licensing regulations.
- Stamina, climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, manual dexterity, standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally.
- Good vision, hearing, and ability to operate vehicles.
