Position OverviewThe general purpose of a drain technician position is to remove all fluids and environmentally hazardous materials safely and efficiently from vehicles in a salvage yard, as well as extract any valuable commodities such as catalytic converters and batteries. The drain technician operates heavy equipment to bring the vehicle into the processing area for draining and is responsible for properly disposing of all fluids and environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with applicable regulations.
The goal of the drain technician is to help ensure that salvage yard operations are conducted in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, while also maximizing the value of the materials extracted from the vehicles before placing out in the yard for customers to remove the parts they need.
- Remove all fluids from vehicles, such as gasoline, oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, and transmission fluid.
- Handle and extract hazardous materials and valuable commodities.
- Drain fluids from all vehicles with a high level of efficiency at the rate at which the vehicles are purchased and arrive on site.
- Identify and handle hazardous materials in vehicles, such as freon from air conditioning systems, battery acid, Mercury Switches, and other potentially dangerous substances.
- Extract valuable commodities from vehicles, such as catalytic converters and batteries.
- Proper disposal methods must be followed in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of the fluids and hazardous materials removed from each vehicle, as well as any valuable commodities extracted.
- Operate heavy equipment to bring vehicles into the processing area for draining and removal after the process is complete.
- Utilize specialized equipment and follow proper safety procedures.
- Identify, handle, store and dispose of hazardous substances following all required disposal procedures.
- Follow strict safety protocols to ensure their own safety and the safety of others in the salvage yard.
- Adhere to safety regulations, environmental regulations, and company policies while performing duties.
- Ensuring all equipment is properly inspected and following proper handling techniques to prevent injuries.
- Wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Reports any issues to their supervisor.
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Basic knowledge of automotive systems and components, experience preferred.
- Forklift Certificate preferred.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment.
- Ability to properly use hand and power tools.
- Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Must be able to work effectively alone or with others in a team environment.
- Must be able to work collaboratively across functions. Share expertise with others.
- Must be a self-starter with the demonstrated ability to meet timelines and schedules related to essential functions described above.
- Must demonstrate strong attention to detail and strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
- Must be able to remain in and operate equipment in a workstation which is an area designated for core processing in a shop or dismantle area.
- Work in an area equipped with drain tables, forklifts, chain hoists, and other tools as needed.
- Occasionally move about a salvage yard.
- Ability to use both hands regularly with enough dexterity to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
- Ability to lift, move, and carry objects and materials up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance.
- Expected work hours are based on role and location
- Ability to work occasional overtime as needed as determined by the employee’s supervisor.
