Overview

VCS Athletic Coach

The VCS Athletic Coach is responsible for assisting and supporting in coaching duties for one or more athletic programs. The coach may specialize in specific areas of coaching or a component of a team program. The Athletic Coach works with student athletes to develop proper skills, game strategies, and discipline. The Athletic Coach assists the athletic program in providing leadership and supervision for all team activities, promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Duties

And Responsibilities
  • Assist in the coordination and supervision of the athletic program and team.
  • Help students achieve gains in athletic skill and team performance.
  • Assist in designing a training program and game program.
  • Assume duties of the Head Coach if required to do so.
  • Assist in the development of team rules, communicating them to the players and their parents, and equitably enforcing them.
  • Maintain good public relations for the athletic program including:
    • Ensure that student athletes meet eligibility rules.
    • Ensure that student athletes adhere to training rules, lettering policies, grade requirements, and rules of behavior.
    • Ensure continual supervision of student athletes on the field, in conditioning, and in locker and shower rooms.
    • Ensure that health and safety precautions are observed during all activities.
  • Immediately report all major injuries incurred during practice sessions or competition to the Head Coach and Athletic Director.
  • See that school policies are observed during all activities.
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Obtain advance approval of the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director for all activities and expenditures.
  • Adhere to all health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Blood-borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or Superintendent.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree related field preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills and the ability to work effectively with student athletes.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable sports and playing rules.
  • Knowledge of OSAA rules governing the program and student-athletes.
  • Speaks English at an idiomatic level.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and implement activities.
  • Exceptional leadership skills and knowledge in coordinating activities, training, and games under the direction of the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials;
  • Occasional stooping, bending, and reaching;
  • Requires some travel;
  • Must work indoors and outdoors year-round;
  • Must work in noisy and crowded environments. Ability to demonstrate the appropriate skills and techniques to be used by the athletes;
  • Sighted with capacity to visually monitor athletes;
  • Excellent English written and oral communications.
