During the first few months, you will receive hands‑on training in the office, although telework may also be available. The details will be worked out between you and your supervisor.
This position is designated as the statewide expert in theory review for tax discovery in the Compliance Review, Research, and Tax Discovery Training Unit (CRRT) and is responsible for important key tasks that support the Tax Discovery program in areas such as theory review of assessments, tax policy, divisional training, taxability research, and field/Revenue Agent support. Here are some of the other duties you can expect:
- Theory review of assessments is achieved by independently performing theory review of tax assessments submitted for issuance by Compliance tax discovery staff, ensuring proper identification and assessment of taxes and penalties consistent with statutory, regulatory, and agency requirements.
- Supporting tax policy as the primary resource for Compliance managers and staff on current and emerging areas and issues involving taxation and tax policy. This position plays a key role in the development and delivery of training for new and existing tax discovery agents.
- Staying current on all statutory, regulatory, and tax policy changes involving taxation and ensuring those changes are communicated amongst the review team first; then providing communication and training on the changes to divisional staff. While researching taxability topics and developing training, this position will work all stages of the Tax Discovery investigation and assessment submission process.
- Remaining current on best practices from other divisions conducting theory review in the process of issuing assessments and keeping the CRRT District Compliance Manager appraised for ideas and suggestions for improvements.
- Supporting other essential functions of the CRRT while providing technical guidance, training on taxability, and assessment review to Compliance Tax Discovery staff statewide.
- Working to resolve complex; time sensitive and possibly politically sensitive taxpayer issues related to theory review and tax policy. As the duties of this position help align divisional tax assessment practice with other operating divisions, it promotes consistency in the application of tax law, which supports the mission of the agency to fairly and efficiently collect revenues.
