Overview

The Labor and Industries (LNI) Division of the WA State Attorney General's Office has an opening for an attorney to serve as a Team Leader, Managing Assistant Attorney General 1 (MAAG1) in the Olympia section. This position supervises 3-5 attorneys and handles a high-paced litigation caseload across various forums, provides client advice for LNI programs, and participates in a management team focused on professional development and divisional goals.

Responsibilities
  • Direct supervision of 3-5 attorneys in the Olympia section, including workload management, mentoring, and performance input.
  • Lead and support administrative tasks such as reviewing and approving attorney travel, timekeeping, and leave; lead and participate in meetings; and help set yearly goals with the team.
  • Coach and mentor team members; actively listen to resource needs, workload balance, client needs, and professional development interests; recognize and appreciate contributions.
  • Assist with attorney and staff recruitment; collaborate with the Olympia Management Team on shared responsibilities and goals; lead and support process improvements and other projects within the Division.
  • Manage own caseload in Industrial Insurance and/or other programs; assign cases, balance workloads; review settlements and proposed decisions; and back up the Section Chief as needed.
  • Handle litigation and advisory work across a broad range of topics within the Division, including medical and vocational expert matters; provide client-focused guidance as required.
Qualifications
  • Required:

    Licensed to practice law in Washington State; ABA-accredited law school or WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; willingness to pursue admission if not yet admitted.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and a strong commitment to public service and ethical standards.
  • Ability to foster teamwork and collaboration; maintain productive working relationships with attorneys, staff, and clients; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience developing practical solutions; proactive problem-solving skills; ability to manage electronic case files and participate in remote or hybrid hearings and trials.
  • Ability to manage an active caseload, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines; ability to work in an inclusive, creative, and collaborative environment.
  • Desire to participate in a growth-oriented culture with feedback and continuous learning.

Desired qualifications (not required): experience in civil litigation, discovery, motions and briefs, negotiations, and oral argument; experience providing ethics-based legal advice; prior experience managing a work group; ability to manage competing priorities under pressure.

Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary range: approximately $86,328 to $161,700, with exact amount set by Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA.
