Medical Technologist Responsibilities

• Supervision
  • Assists supervisor with scheduling, quality control, and maintenance programs, workflow organization.
  • Serves on interview teams.
• Distribution and Transportation
  • Assures accurate and efficient transportation of lab-related supplies, equipment, and specimens.
  • Follows all laws and regulations in the processing and transportation of laboratory specimens.
• Specimen Handling & Processing
  • Follows regulatory guidelines in handling/processing of laboratory specimens.
  • Follows proper policy for accurate patient identification and labeling of all specimens.
• Communicates effectively with all NMHS staff, patients, their family members and customers.
• Uses AIDET as applicable, attends CARES training, and ensures proper service recovery for patients and/or caregivers; answers telephone politely and efficiently.
• Works as part of a team with all Pathology and NMHS employees.
• Maintains accurate and timely reporting of department testing and performance improvement initiatives; documents instrument monthly maintenance and quality control.
• Assists with training students and new employees; participates in continuing education and stays abreast of regulatory changes.
• Adheres to NMHS/NMMC policies, local/state/federal regulations, and CAP & CLSI standards.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological Science or related field.
• ASCP Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
• Minimum of 2 years laboratory experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist.
• Valid Mississippi Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
• Proficient skills with LIS.
• Good organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills.
• Knowledge of handling biohazardous specimens.
