Job Summary

The Dietitian at the VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) performs or supervises others in providing a full range of professional dietetic services, including program development, food preparation and service, patient therapy and education, and research. Clinical Dietitians perform duties in medical nutrition and education, and are responsible for clinical nutrition management, quality improvement, and the nutritional phase of medical research studies.

Dietitians work closely with the clinic PACT team staff—physicians, nurses, and others—to integrate the patient’s nutritional care into the total treatment program. The Dietitian’s contributions include nutritional assessment, development of nutrition care plans and education, and monitoring of outcomes.

Essential Functions
  • Independently plans, develops, and directs all nutritional care activities for assigned Veterans, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs; coordinates care with other providers, Veterans, families, and community.
  • Gathers nutritional data and evidence to diagnose nutrition‑specific problems; develops and implements individualized medical nutrition therapy plans aligned with patient goals.
  • Evaluates and monitors the effectiveness of nutrition therapy interventions, revises plans as conditions change, and refers patients for additional counseling or services as appropriate.
  • Provides nutrition counseling for individuals and groups, adapting materials to cultural, religious, and educational contexts.
  • Manages the VA MOVE Weight Management Program, conducts group education, and provides individual counseling when appropriate; completes pre‑ and post‑surgery assessments for bariatric candidates.
  • Serves as the nutrition expert on the interdisciplinary team, advising on nutritional recommendations and therapy efficacy.
Required Skills
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Electronic Medical Records, and general computer proficiency.
  • Detail oriented with strong multitasking ability.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification from AHA or MTN.
  • Preferred:
    One year of recent clinical nutrition practice experience.
Required Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree from a U.S. regionally accredited institution, completed with an ACEND/CADE accredited dietetics program.
  • Minimum one advanced practice credential (CNSC, CSR, CSG, CDE, or CSO).
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) / Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential.
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI) required.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
  • Moderate physical activity: handle average‑weight objects up to 25 pounds, stand, walk, or sit for more than four hours per day.
  • Typical interior/office work environment.
  • Respond promptly to medical emergencies within the clinic.
