The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness, sterilization, and proper assembly of surgical instruments and medical equipment used throughout the healthcare facility. This role plays a critical part in infection prevention and patient safety by adhering to established protocols and standards for decontamination, inspection, packaging, and sterilization. Technicians work closely with surgical teams, nursing staff, and other departments to maintain inventory, manage instrument trays, and ensure timely delivery of sterile supplies.
Attention to detail, knowledge of sterilization techniques, and commitment to quality control are essential to success in this position.
- Decontaminates, sterilizes and prepares surgical instruments
- Decontaminates clinical equipment
- Distributes surgical instruments and clinical equipment
- Assures quality instrument set preparation
- Monitors and re‑stocks supplies and equipment
- Accurately and effectively communicates with Central Sterile Processing (CSP) and Surgical Staff
- Record‑keeping of instrument status and sterilization processes
- Monitors and records biological testing of sterilization processes
- Attends required in‑services, annual review and educational programs
- Adheres to NMHS/NMMC Policies/Procedures/Guidelines and applicable local, state, federal policies, procedures, and regulations
- Complies with accrediting agencies guidelines (e.g., DNV, OSHA)
- Associate's Degree graduate of an accredited school of Operating Room Technician or Sterile Processing program (required)
- Or high school diploma or GED equivalent with a minimum of 4 years experience in a healthcare or hospital setting (required)
- CRCST – Certified and Registered Central Service Technician within 1 year (required)
- 1–3 years of experience in a healthcare or hospital setting (preferred)
- Must organize and prioritize work assignments
- Interacts daily with patients, central sterile processing and O.R. staff, and surgeons
- Good communication skills and a positive, caring attitude toward customers and co‑workers
- Ability to maintain composure in a stressful environment
- Ability to provide information regarding instruments, equipment, and sterilization techniques
