The Surgical Nurse Practitioner at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating surgical patients while adhering to established standards and protocols. This role requires a diverse set of skills and abilities to effectively support trauma surgeons and medical teams during critical procedures, think and act swiftly in high‑pressure situations, understand trauma care protocols, and remain calm and composed in stressful, emotionally charged environments.

These abilities are essential for ensuring the highest level of care and support in a Tier 2 trauma setting.

Job Functions Patient Care
  • Assesses, diagnoses, and treats surgical patients according to the scope of practice outlined by the Board of Nursing, approved protocols, and national standards of practice as directed by the physician preceptor.
  • Remains on call and works night, evening, weekend, and holiday rotation as business needs dictate.
  • Functions similarly to a physician in their assigned area in the absence of such professional.
  • Performs complex and simple wound closure, wound vac management (application and removal), and appropriate ordering of devices.
  • First and second assist in operating room.
  • Clinic visits for post‑op follow‑ups, ER follow‑ups, and new patient referrals.
Patient Education
  • Provides patients and/or family members with education related to the disease process, health, and wellness.
  • Performs pre‑ and post‑op rounds.
  • Writes progress notes and discharge summaries.
  • Serves as a resource for community agencies as appropriate.
Documentation
  • Ensures timely and accurate documentation of patient status and patient care activities including treatments, procedures, and medications prescribed.
  • Views and interprets X‑rays, CT scans, and MRIs.
  • Orders and interprets labs.
Continuing Education
  • Ensures clinical competence.
  • Stays abreast of changes in medical management.
  • Participates in a variety of health care education activities.
Regulation
  • Adheres to NMHS/NMMC policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Complies with applicable local, state, federal policies, procedures, guidelines, regulations, statutes.
Qualifications Education
  • Master's Degree in Nursing (required).
Licenses and Certifications
  • AANP – American Association Of Nurse Practitioners.
  • CRNFA – Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant.
Work Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years clinical experience as an RN.
Skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Maintains working knowledge of skills and current technology.
  • Interacts with a patient population of all ages ranging from neonates to geriatrics.
  • Assesses, diagnoses, and treats patients in the clinic setting.
  • Works without close supervision.
  • Organizes multiple tasks and maintains control of workflow.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPAA guidelines and regulations.
  • Accurately diagnoses and treats patient conditions.
  • Stays abreast of healthcare system changes and current trends in medical management.
  • Provides quality care in the most cost‑efficient manner.
  • Performs patient care activities within scope of practice and as directed by physician preceptor.
