Overview

Part-Time Lecturer Pool in Horticulture. The Agriculture Program seeks dedicated instructors to teach within the Horticulture concentration. Courses will utilize the on-campus Sustainable Garden as a field laboratory, combining classroom instruction with field trips and hands-on farm training/workshops to deepen theoretical and practical understanding of horticulture practices. Projected course assignments will focus on integrated pest management, weed biology, tree and fruit crop production and management, and principles and practices of horticulture.

Additional compensated opportunities may be available for specialized course development, establishing an active student-focused experiential learning program, student mentoring, and advising a highly diverse student population, including those pursuing Pest Control Advisor (PCA) and/or Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) licenses.

Appointments are based on available teaching need and may vary by semester. Successful candidates with interest in exploring competitive grant opportunities to fund summer activities and interdisciplinary projects on the university’s 2-acre Sustainable Garden and fruit orchard will be supported, as will those who can provide technical support to local farmers and ranchers. This position is contingent upon the availability of authorized funding.

Responsibilities
  • Teach courses in the Horticulture concentration, integrating field-based experiences with classroom instruction.
  • Employ the 2-acre Sustainable Garden and fruit orchard as a field laboratory for hands-on learning.
  • Facilitate field trips and workshops to enhance theoretical and practical understanding of horticulture practices.
  • Develop and contribute to experiential learning opportunities and student mentoring.
  • Assist in advising a diverse student population and supporting those pursuing PCA/CCA licenses.
Minimum Qualifications
  • M.S. or equivalent degree in Horticulture, Plant Science, Agronomy, Pomology or closely related field.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence, typically demonstrated by positive student evaluations.
  • Evidence of experience or interest in serving a highly diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching at the community college or university level; proficiency in online instruction.
  • Relevant agricultural extension experience; background in production and management of crops common to California.
  • Familiarity with controlled environment agriculture platforms and cross-disciplinary experiential learning programs for high school or community college contexts.

Compensation

Salary is based on qualifications and experience. As a member of the CSU System, a competitive benefits package is offered. Newly hired lecturers with terminal degrees are placed in Range 3; others are placed in Range
2. Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum of the range. Salaries are prorated based on units assigned and paid in six monthly payments per semester. Salary ranges:
Range 2 and Range 3.

The Bachelor of Science in Agriculture is a multidisciplinary program with four concentrations:
Agricultural Biology, Agricultural Economics, Sustainable Agriculture, and General Agriculture.
