Position: Chemistry Lab Assistant 1

Essential Functions

  • Prepare all incoming samples for testing.
  • Clean and maintain glassware for the department.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the Chemistry department equipment and work areas.
  • Maintain a constant supply of distilled water for the Chemistry department.
  • Other duties as required.
Position Objectives
  • Using the appropriate equipment to prepare all incoming samples for testing. Consistent use of food processor, meat grinder, blender, spice grinder, vanilla chopper and mill grinder.
  • Carefully prepare and label shipment packages to be sent out. Packaging may consist of samples to be sent for outside testing, back to the client or equipment for repair.
  • Coordinate with Microbiology Department to maintain consistent supply of distilled water for Chemistry labs.
  • Weekly, clean the Chemistry area of the walk-in refrigerator. Disposing of old samples, cleaning shelves, and organizing the area for new samples.
  • Using top load balance, weigh samples to obtain correct and accurate weights.
  • Using appropriate cleaning materials to clean and sterilize all laboratory instruments, glassware, flatware and equipment.
  • Timely document all cleaning and maintenance performed on the equipment in the Chemistry department.
  • Proactively assist Laboratory Associates and Analysts in the performance of chemical tests.
  • Daily, check and record temperature of all refrigerators and freezers in the Chemistry department.
  • Daily, verify and record calibration of the top load balance used to weigh samples.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Management.
  • Effectively interact with other departments.
Position Requirements
  • High School or equivalent.
  • Good organizational skills - ability to use your time, energy, resources, etc. in an effective manner.
  • Time management – one’s own time and the time of others.
  • Basic arithmetic skills – using mathematics to solve problems.
  • Good communication skills – speaking, reading, writing and listening.
  • Ability to lift 10-50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
