The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (ChBE) and the College of Engineering at The University of Alabama (UA) invite applications for the position of Department Head. The anticipated start date is Fall 2026 or earlier if appropriate.

This opportunity is for a visionary leader with a record of success as an outstanding scholar, researcher, teacher, and mentor. The Department has experienced rapid growth and offers significant resources to expand its programs and research. The new Department Head will shape the future of the department and work closely with the College to achieve national excellence.

• Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
• 10+ years of experience as a tenure-track/tenured faculty member in a related department.
• Record of appointment as a Full Professor in UA’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.
• Significant record of scholarship in an engineering department offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

• Ph.D. in a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
• 15+ years of experience as a tenure-track/tenured faculty member at a leading R1 institution.
• Demonstrated record of high-quality research and scholarly publications recognized nationally and/or internationally.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
• Prior academic leadership experience (associate department head/chair, department head/chair, center director, or similar).

Required documents include:

• Cover letter identifying the department name, position title, and name of applicant.
• 2 to 5 page statement describing how the applicant’s experience positions them to serve as Department Head.
• Curriculum vitae or résumé.
• Statement of research interests and plans.
• 1‑2 page statement of teaching interests.
• Names and contact information for at least four professional references (references will not be contacted without prior notification and approval by the candidate).

Applications are preferred on or before October 20, 2025, but a review will continue until the position is filled. A typical start date is August 16, 2026, with flexibility as needed.
