Job SummaryThe Safe State Environmental Health and Safety Consultant I provides independent, routine industrial hygiene consultation services including onsite visits to businesses and industries in Alabama.
Additional Department SummaryWorks primarily in the Safe State OSHA Consultation area to provide independent, routine onsite consultation services with industrial hygiene-focused emphasis to businesses and industries throughout the state of Alabama. Performs consultations in accordance with OSHA guidelines and University of Alabama policy. Documents activities. Identifies OSHA hazards. Assists in developing controls. Works with Safe State Environmental Programs as needed to assist with inspections, assessments, and other environmental, health and safety surveys and related field work.
Requires regular overnight travel to consultation sites (including out-of-state travel).
RequiredMinimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and six (6) years of occupational safety experience; OR associate's degree and four (4) years of occupational safety experience; OR bachelor's degree in engineering, safety science, business, management, public health, or physical sciences and two (2) years of occupational safety experience; OR master's degree or higher in engineering, safety science, industrial management, public health, or physical sciences and some occupational safety experience.

Minimum Qualifications
Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Skills and KnowledgeMust be able and willing to travel to remote, out-of-town locations within the state using a personal vehicle for at least three days per week (to include overnight stays).
Must be able and willing to take medical exams periodically, if & when necessary, as required by OSHA regulations.
Preferred QualificationsMaster's degree. Working knowledge of OSHA safety and health regulations, especially as related to OSHA 21 (d) Consultation Program.
