Job Description

  • Administer preliminary testing and measurements to assess patients' vision and eye health.
  • Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Prepare patients for examinations by explaining procedures and ensuring their comfort.
  • Assist ophthalmologists during examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures.
  • Set up and clean up after procedures.
  • Act as a scribe while the physician examines patients, entering data into electronic medical records or paper chart.
  • Maintain and operate ophthalmic equipment, ensuring it is clean and functioning properly.
  • Document patients’ medical history and examination results accurately in electronic health records.
  • Provide patient education on eye health, treatment plans, and post‑operative care.
  • Schedule appointments and manage patient flow efficiently.
  • Order supplies.
  • Assist in training other ophthalmic technicians.
  • Comply with all practice procedures and protocols.
  • Act in accordance with all State and Federal regulations.
  • Maintain a positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self‑motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
  • Potential for travel between hospital and satellite clinics.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be able to travel between hospital and satellite clinics as needed.
  • Currently certified as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology preferred.
