Systems Engineer, Electrical Engineering
About Rivian:
Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract. As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown.
Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Summary:
In this role, you will lead the system design process to analyze upstream requirements (vehicle architectures, vehicle product features, vehicle powertrain architectures, Pack design architectures), and align into the sub-system control architecture focused on battery control. You will be at the forefront of development decisions to determine the overall electronics control elements of the Battery Control System including all controllers, actuators, and sensors needed to achieve performance and safety of the battery product.
You will lead the application and adoption of new and emerging technologies for optimization and improvement of the battery control system to maximize manufacturability, serviceability, cost, diagnostics, reliability, and many other metrics.
- Lead functional development through analysis of impact of architectural changes to fulfill upstream requirements via decomposed HW and SW requirements with expected performance, including control, sensing, state estimation, diagnostic etc.
- Create/update/modify/manage documentation to maintain accurate engineering work products; work with related engineers to review/approve/validate/release the deliverables and changes following Rivian engineering process and tool chains
- Represent the Battery Control Systems Engineering Team as a subject matter expert in Battery Control functional areas in cross functional development teams
- Determine the correct strategy for the definition of diagnostics and reactions to failure modes in the system using knowledge and understanding of the presence of high-level battery safety hazards to the user, service, and manufacturing personnel.
- Understand the failure analysis and top level effects of failure of the product in order to design the correct strategy for protection of the system against failures.
- Work together with cross-functional teams cascading sub-system requirements to SW/HW/component requirements, as well as validation specification development.
- Collaborate with system integration and validation engineers on validation planning; support validation execution and result review; support trouble shooting to determine solutions to observed issues
- Adapt and work within dynamic development timelines of multiple programs, with accelerated hardware production timelines, and software release cadence
- Quickly transition to a variety of engineering discipline work, from high-level cross sub-system projects to specific component focus, depending on need of the team and stage of development/ production
- 5+ years of work experience in HV Battery and/or EV powertrain system
- At least a bachelor's degree in engineering discipline
Previous experience in control architecture design for high voltage battery systems especially for control of HV batteries including application of sensors, actuators, and diagnostics of sensors and actuators according to ISO
26262.
- Detailed understanding of battery voltage and temperature protection and monitoring components, pack monitoring components, switch gear, fusing and sensing components;
Understanding of failure modes, effects, diagnostics, and appropriate safety reactions of HV control elements of the battery system including contractors, pyro fuses, contactor diagnostic strategies, High voltage measurement and sensing topologies
Capable of modeling analysis for the system components and interaction with HV battery
- Previous experience in automotive product development environments, familiar with development process, product launches and production schedules
- Previous hands-on experience with design according to ISO 26262, especially part 4/5/6
- Previous experience with DFMEA and FTA for system/HW/SW
- Strong communication, multitasking, and interpersonal skills, both in presentation and technical writing
- Display aptitude with a variety of engineering tools such as CAN loggers, software debuggers, oscilloscopes, multi-meters, and HV test equipment
- Holistic understanding of…
