• UT Health Tyler, the flagship hospital of the system, has 502 licensed beds specializing in advanced acute care medicine. Our hospital includes a 24‑hour ER with Level 1 trauma center, a comprehensive stroke center, more than 500 physicians and a full complement of subspecialty groups.

• The role of the surgical scrub extern is to learn under the supervision of the certified scrub technologist how to first scrub cases. Scrubs, dons gown and glove using sterile technique with supervision, retractor holder when needed.
• The main focus of the scrub extern is to facilitate self‑learning process of sterile technique, surgeon anticipation, assertive communication and how to prioritize when in the scrub role.
• Assist in turnover cleaning and setup preparation for cases to follow.
• Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.

Job Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Currently enrolled in a Surgical Scrub Technologist program or graduated from a Surgical Scrub Technologist program and in need of clinical hours.
• BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.
