Title: Assistant Attorney General I-IV – Child Support Division, Office of the Attorney General, Texas
Location: Tyler, TX
Salary: $125,000 – $175,000 (commensurate with experience)
OverviewThe Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the State of Texas’s law firm, representing the public in a broad range of legal matters. Within OAG, the Child Support Division (CSD) provides legal services that encourage responsible parenting and secure financial support for children. Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) in CSD represent Texas in judicial and administrative family law proceedings, establish paternity, obtain and enforce child support orders, and collaborate with community partners to serve families.
Responsibilities- Represent the State of Texas at all court and administrative proceedings related to child support, including locating paternity, obtaining, modifying, terminating, and enforcing child support orders.
- Prepare and present trial court filings, motions, orders, and opinions, and provide legal advice to state agencies and the public.
- Conduct investigations, draft legal opinions, and negotiate settlement agreements in complex family law matters.
- Develop and deliver training and technical assistance programs for child support program staff and other stakeholders.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the Texas Family Code, the Texas Family Code Family Law Practice Act, and related statutes and regulations.
- Collaborate with other state agencies, community organizations, and the public to promote the involvement of both parents in children’s lives.
- Perform related duties as assigned by OAG leadership.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Admission to practice law in Texas and good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
- Knowledge of the Texas Family Code and family law practice.
- Skill in legal writing, mediation, negotiation, trial advocacy, and research.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, data entry, and multitasking.
- Excellent oral and written communication, judgment, decision making, and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently, collaborate with colleagues, and travel up to 25%.
- Willingness to work more than 40 hours as needed to meet deadlines.
- Two years of experience in handling family law cases.
- Experience in jury trial or high‑volume legal practice.
- Proficiency in Spanish (reading, writing, speaking).
