Position Overview

Consumer Safety Inspector – USDA‑FSIS. $5,000 sign‑on bonus, creditable service for annual leave accrual, Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, and $1,000 employee referral bonus may be available. Shifts and species will vary by assignment. Employees may be detailed to any shift at any plant in the Dallas District.

Responsibilities

The duties of a Consumer Safety Inspector include inspecting meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and other regulated food commodities or products for human consumption. Inspectors collect samples, perform field tests, identify abnormalities, recommend corrective actions, develop written reports, communicate findings orally, and maintain effective contacts with internal and external stakeholders. They work in hazardous environments and rely on the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, SSOP and HACCP principles, basic mathematics and elementary statistics to conduct testing and sampling procedures.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
GS‑05 Level
: at least 52 weeks of qualified experience with regulated food commodities and substances (e.g., meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beverages, pharmaceuticals).
GS‑07 Level
: at least 52 weeks of independent routine assignments in similar environments.
GS‑08 Level
: at least one year of specialized experience, including work under the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts and SSOP/HACCP verification.
GS‑09 Level
: at least one year of specialized experience and more independent duties such as recommending export refusals and providing temporary coverage at other locations. Volunteer experience through national service programs may be credited. Please view OPM’s Qualification Standards for the Consumer Safety Inspector Series (GS‑1862).
