Position: TPWD - Archeologist III (Cultural Resources Coordinator)

Overview

Under the direction of the Cultural Resources Program Director, the Cultural Resource Coordinator (CRC) performs advanced (senior-level) archeological, research, and cultural resource management work and is responsible for coordinating cultural resources management activities within the region. This position ensures agency compliance with state and federal antiquities laws, including the Texas Parks Wildlife Department (TPWD) Code, the Antiquities Code of Texas, and the National Historic Preservation Act.

Responsibilities
  • Review projects involving ground-disturbing activities on TPWD properties and determine required cultural resource management actions.
  • Develop scopes of work, management plans, and oversight of contracted work for individual state parks.
  • Manage project budgets and provide technical assistance and staff support to operations and site superintendents.
  • Function as a member of project teams and conduct archeological fieldwork.
  • Coordinate archeological efforts with preservation services, curatorial services, interpretive services, and natural resources programs.
  • Exercise stop‑work authority all regional activities that may affect cultural resources’ integrity.
  • Provide assistance to the Cultural Resources Program Director and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work under minimal supervision, exercising extensive initiative and independent judgement.
Qualifications
  • Education – Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archeology, Applied History, Historic Preservation, or a related field.
  • Experience – Five years of progressively responsible archeological experience, including three years of supervisory experience in archeological fieldwork, project management, cultural resources management, and writing professional monographs or reports.
  • Licensure – Valid state driver’s license. Retention of position is contingent upon maintaining the license.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Knowledge of prehistoric and historic archeology; knowledge of prehistoric and historic material culture; knowledge of artifact identification and analysis techniques; knowledge of Texas prehistoric and historic archeology; knowledge of historic architecture; knowledge of natural resources protection and stewardship practices.
