Building Environmental Services Technician

The Mather (Tysons, VA)

We are seeking a Building Environmental Services Technician to maintain the safety, security, and overall environmental well‑being of The Mather Tysons. The technician will conduct thorough property inspections, monitor access points, respond to emergencies, and enforce security policies while working independently with minimal supervision.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct scheduled inspections and walkthroughs using barcode scanning to monitor security at key locations.
  • Inspect parking areas, check for fire hazards, blocked exits, or improper material storage.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to residents, guests and visitors.
  • Review emails, receive shift briefings, and collect necessary equipment (radio, iPad, barcode scanner).
  • Verify visitor check‑ins, secure entry points, and log deliveries.
  • Monitor contractor activities to ensure compliance with policies.
  • Monitor CCTV or other surveillance systems for suspicious activity or unauthorized access.
  • Respond to door alerts, emergency wellness checks, and other security concerns.
  • Respond promptly to fire, weather or other emergency alarms and follow established protocols.
  • Assist in emergency evacuations or conduct safety drills when required.
  • Escort staff or visitors to vehicles upon request.
  • Identify slip, trip, or fall hazards.
  • Report maintenance issues (malfunctioning doors, lights) to appropriate teams and generate work requests.
  • Complete tasks using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Document suspicious activities, security incidents or emergencies through detailed reports.
  • Assist with investigations, gathering evidence or interviewing witnesses.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement or emergency services when necessary.
  • Collaborate with reception to resolve security issues and provide updates.
  • Perform final lobby check‑ins to confirm all information is up to date.
  • Inspect the loading dock for overnight package deliveries and ensure proper handling.
  • Secure all exterior doors, including side doors, to maintain building security.
  • Check compactor rooms for proper functionality.
  • Enforce property policies such as noise restrictions, smoking bans and curfews in a professional manner.
  • Work with leadership (Assistant Director of Hospitality Services and Chief Engineer) regarding policy violations.
  • Complete checklists, email day‑shift reports and clock out on time.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 2–3 years of experience in public safety, security, or environmental safety and at least 21 years of age.
  • Proficiency in English language.
  • Experience working with older adults.
  • Willingness to be part of a self‑directed team.
  • Service orientation with excellent interpersonal skills; ability to multitask.
  • Beginner proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Proficient with digital devices such as barcode scanners, iPads and surveillance systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills.
  • Weekend and holiday availability required; one overnight part‑time opening.

The Mather is a Life Plan Community in Tysons, Virginia, for residents 62 and older. Opened in March 2024, it includes 293 independent living units, assisted living, memory support, and skilled nursing, along with restaurants, fitness center, art studio and gardens.
