Role Description

This full‑time, on‑site Chartered Building Surveyor role is based in Downside and involves delivering professional surveying services for historic and traditional buildings. Day‑to‑day responsibilities include carrying out building inspections, preparing condition surveys, and producing clear written reports and recommendations. The role also includes developing feasibility studies for repair, conservation, and refurbishment projects, along with managing contracts and monitoring works on site to ensure quality, compliance, and budget control.

The Chartered Building Surveyor will advise clients on building defects, maintenance strategies, and statutory obligations, while collaborating with internal colleagues and external stakeholders such as contractors, consultants, and conservation bodies. The position requires a client‑focused approach, effective communication, and a commitment to preserving the character and performance of traditional and historic properties.

Qualifications
  • Strong professional capability in Building Surveying, including experience with historic and traditional buildings.
  • Proficiency in conducting Condition Surveys and preparing clear, structured technical reports.
  • Experience in preparing Feasibility Studies for conservation, repair, refurbishment, and adaptive reuse projects.
  • Competence in Contract Management, including administering contracts, monitoring works, and managing project risks.
  • Knowledge and practical experience in handling Dilapidations matters and advising clients on obligations and negotiation strategies.
  • Chartered status (MRICS or equivalent) or working towards chartered qualification in Building Surveying or a related discipline.
  • Sound understanding of building pathology, traditional construction methods, and conservation principles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information in a straightforward manner.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Proficiency with relevant IT tools (e.g., MS Office, surveying software) and willingness to adopt new technologies.
  • Full driving licence and ability to travel to sites and client locations as required.
