Working with specialists and partners, the organisation helps people understand, value and care for historic places. This opportunity sits within its Portfolio Development and Delivery team, supporting major projects and programmes of organisational significance.

The role

Are you an experienced construction project manager looking to contribute to a nationally significant heritage initiative? You will help develop a major capital project addressing the challenges facing archaeological archives in England, driving delivery of the business case for a national archaeological archives centre. Reporting to the Head of Major Projects, you will bring together internal specialists, external consultants and contractors to move the project forward.

  • Manage end-to-end project planning and delivery, including benefits, budgets, risks, milestones and reporting.
  • Develop business cases and tender documents, leading procurement and negotiations in line with organisational policies and Treasury Green Book requirements.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, including architects, surveyors, facilities managers and technical conservation specialists.
  • Ensure statutory, regulatory, health and safety, CDM, security, JCT contract and governance requirements are addressed.
  • Apply project controls aligned with the RIBA Plan of Work and Government Functional Standard for Project Delivery.
  • Support governance and assurance processes, communicate progress to senior stakeholders and capture lessons learned.
  • Contribute to other projects and programmes, sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues through mentoring and collaboration.
About you

You will bring a qualification in Building Surveying, Construction Management, Architecture or another relevant construction discipline, alongside experience of managing construction projects on public estates. You will be confident delivering complex, multi-stakeholder projects involving business cases, external partnerships and organisational change.

  • Experience of major construction projects, such as collection stores, refurbishments, building services and fit-outs within existing buildings.
  • Proven skills in budget management, public sector procurement, construction contracts, JCT contracts and risk management.
  • Sound knowledge of building methods, materials, defects, maintenance and repair, alongside relevant planning, building, fire safety, accessibility and health and safety requirements.
  • Understanding of the RIBA Plan of Work and awareness of sustainable design, energy efficiency, retrofit and climate adaptation.
  • Strong communication, analytical and report-writing skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and build effective partnerships.
  • Excellent Microsoft 365 and wider digital skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently as part of a dispersed team.
  • An enthusiastic, collaborative and adaptable approach, with an interest in the historic environment and a commitment to excellent service.
