Location: Brighton
Consultant in Clinical Oncology (Head Neck & Skin) Job Overview
This post is for a permanent Consultant Clinical Oncologist with an interest in Head, Neck & Skin based in Brighton, but must be prepared to travel between sites. The workload predominantly relates to outpatient clinical activity, with regular commitments to caring for general oncology inpatients and review of patients in the same day emergency care unit as well as taking part in an out of hours oncology on call rota.
In addition the post will require clinical leadership, MDT attendance and active participation, medical student and registrar teaching, and research opportunities.
Main Duties of the Job- Radiotherapy Planning
- Clinical trials leadership and delivery
- Acute Oncology team leadership and clinical management
- Clinical admin generated from patients seen and liaison with other AHPs and primary care
- Clinical Governance meetings
- Ward reviews when appropriate
- Provide patient care across the oncology pathway in head, neck, and skin cancer.
- Lead and administer clinical trials.
- Lead the Acute Oncology team and manage clinical cases.
- Maintain clinical governance standards and deliver quality improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to teaching of medical students, registrars and AHP staff.
- Engage in research activities, audit, and publication.
- MBBS, FRCR or an appropriate specialist qualification, or its recognised equivalent.
- Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC; within six months of interview if not yet registered. UK‑trained doctors must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Oncology or be within six months of receiving it. Trainees trained outside the UK must provide evidence of equivalent qualification confirmed by GMC.
- Higher Degree (e.g., PhD, MRCP).
- Evidence of training in a broad spectrum of oncology tumour sites.
- Understanding of clinical risk management.
- Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.
- Experience and ability to work in multi‑professional teams.
- Understanding of NHS, Clinical governance and resource constraints.
- Evidence of managerial skills: achievements or courses attended.
- Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching.
- Recognised teaching qualification.
- Evidence of participation in audit.
- Research experience.
- Publications.
- Prizes and honours.
- Appropriate progression of career to date.
- Good communication skills both oral and written.
- Salary range £113,565 - £150,569 per annum pro‑rata.
- Fixed Term Consultant contract.
- Full time – 10 sessions per week.
