Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.
Within a team of medical officers, nursing staff and allied health professionals, your knowledge and expertise in general medicine will be highly valued. Your focus will be on the development and delivery of a robust and effective primary care service.
Running weekly out-patient clinics at various locations you will cover a range of clinical needs including diabetes, hypertension and cardio-pulmonary disease which are prevalent on the island. Actively involved in preventive care and lifestyle management you will serve as a clinical champion for preventive service development.
With support from overseas specialists and using local therapeutic guidelines and protocols, you will also consult paediatrics, ENT and ophthalmology patients. You will take care of in-patients as well as being on the primary on-call rota, supported by on-call cover from specialist colleagues in anaesthetics/ intensive care, general surgery and obstetrics/gynaecology. You will participate in health promotion and preventative care programmes, staff training, incident management, outbreak response and other healthcare emergencies.
Holding full GMC registration or equivalent and good standing with that body, you are a fully qualified GP or have other appropriate higher training. You must be licensed and able to practice in your country of recruitment and also be on the UK GMC GP register or Specialist Register for Internal Medicine or equivalent registration authority in your country of practice.
If you are within 6 months of CCT you may be considered, based on experience.
In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
