PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER
  • Exercise of general professional duties as required
  • Perform particular duties assigned by the principal or, where employed by a board, by the board or the principal of a school where the teacher may be required to work
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, setting and marking work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils
  • Promoting the general progress and well‑being of individual pupils and groups; providing advice and guidance on educational, social matters, future careers and sources of further expert advice; making relevant records and reports
  • Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils (except where doing so would compromise the teacher’s position)
  • Communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils
  • Communicating and cooperating with external bodies approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors
  • Participating in meetings arranged for the purposes described above
  • Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups (except where compromising the teacher’s position)
  • Participating in any scheme of staff development and performance review; reviewing teaching methods and programmes; participating in arrangements for further training and professional development
  • Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, programmes, methods, and pastoral arrangements
  • Maintaining discipline and safeguarding pupils’ health and safety, both on school premises and during authorised activities elsewhere
  • Participating in meetings relating to the curriculum, administration, organisation, and pastoral functions of the school
  • Preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing them for such examinations, recording and reporting assessments, and supervising examination presentations
  • Contributing to the selection, appointment, and professional development of other teachers; coordinating or managing the work of other teachers; participating in the review and development of activities relating to curriculum, organisation, and pastoral functions
  • Participating in administrative and organisational tasks, including the management of support staff and the ordering and allocation of equipment and materials
  • Attending assemblies; registering pupil attendance; supervising pupils before, during, and after school sessions
  • Complying with the full‑time teacher workload: working on 195 days in any year (not more than 190 days involving classroom teaching); available for duty at times and places specified by the Principal; not teaching or supervising more than the specified hours per week; taking at least a 30‑minute break between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm (or 2:30 pm for nursery schools)
  • Providing staff cover to pupils whose teacher is absent, within the limits set for different school sizes and class grades

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA – Section 1
  • Qualifications / Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification recognised for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland (obtained by the closing date).
  • Experience: Minimum six years of demonstrable experience teaching from Foundation Stage, using effective classroom strategies, supporting and challenging all abilities, including those with special educational needs; experience using digital media/technology; experience teaching composite classes.
