Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team as a Student Support Assistant.

The main purpose of the post is to assist and support students with additional needs in the College environment during term time. The role involves providing agreed support in academic areas and reinforcing and promoting life/social skills, both in the student’s academic environment and where possible facilitating integration and participation in wider student community activities.

Responsibilities
  • Provide individual support as specified in Personal Learning Support Plans to assigned students with additional needs during timetabled teaching activities, ensuring students can access appropriate materials, equipment and information in order to support their access to learning.
  • Accompany students as required during lunch/break times and on outings and field trips, in order to ensure their safety and allow them to participate fully in the experience in all activities both on and off campus.
  • Monitor the students’ behaviour when appropriate and follow agreed support strategies such as providing them with supported “time-out” opportunities to de‑escalate difficult situations.
  • Assist students to prioritise their workloads and organise their notes and folders for their course work within the classroom, according to the Lecturer's instructions, and refer any academic support needs to the relevant area.
  • As a member of a wider student support team, provide individual support as specified in Personal Learning Support Plans to assigned students during exams and assessments.
  • Participate in appropriate record keeping under the direction of the Student Support Tutor and proactively pass on any concerns or issues regarding students to the line manager, or the Education Support Lead / Wellbeing Support Lead in their absence, so that the Personal Learning Support Plan can be reviewed and updated as necessary.
  • Ensure that personal information relating to students is kept confidential and is stored safely, following protocols agreed with line manager.
  • Attend or provide reports to case meetings and staff meetings as requested by line manager.
  • The majority of student support will take place in classroom environments between 9-5, Monday to Friday.
  • There may be regular requirements for support to be delivered in practical classes which may be outdoors, in a laboratory or workshop environment.
  • There may be occasional requirements for support to be delivered offsite (for example, during field trips) or outwith standard hours agreed with advance notice.
Minimum qualifications, knowledge and experience
  • Attained, or be working towards, a qualification at SCQF level 4 in a relevant subject (e.g. care, support or education).
  • Proven record of supporting people with additional needs/learning differences.
  • Good communicator and good listener.
  • Proven team player.
  • Good basic literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Experience of using IT systems including MS Word, Excel, Teams and email.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Ability to complete clear and concise written and verbal reports.
  • Ability to use initiative in a range of situations.
  • Demonstrate discretion and understanding of the importance of confidentiality.
  • Flexible, adaptable and pro‑active approach to work.
  • Willingness to engage with recommended training and development.
Desirable qualifications, knowledge and experience
  • Qualification at SCQF level 7 (e.g. HNC or equivalent) in a relevant subject (e.g. care, support or education).
  • Previous experience in supporting people with additional needs/learning differences, specifically with their studies/within a learning environment.
  • Awareness of Equality Act requirements in relation to reasonable adjustments for students.
  • Experience of using assistive technology.
  • Awareness of key physical and mental well‑being issues relevant to students.
