Job Title: Teacher – Primary

Reports To: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher
  • General Professional Duties
    • If employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school.
    • If employed by a board on terms under which the teacher is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which the teacher may, for the time being, be required to work.
  • Particular Duties
    • A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) in a school shall perform, in accordance with any directions reasonably given by the principal, the particular duties assigned.
    • A teacher referred to in paragraph 1(b) shall perform, in accordance with any direction reasonably given by the board or principal, the particular duties assigned.
  • Planning
    • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
    • Teach, according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking work to be carried out by pupils in school and elsewhere.
    • Assess, record and report on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
  • General
    • Promote the general progress and well‑being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned.
    • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social matters and on further education and future careers, including information about sources of more expert advice.
    • Make records and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils, except where doing so might be regarded as compromising the teacher’s own position.
    • Communicate and consult with parents of pupils.
    • Communicate and cooperate with approved external persons or bodies.
    • Participate in meetings arranged for the purposes described above.
  • Assessment/Reporting
    • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups, except where doing so might be regarded as compromising the teacher’s own position.
  • Staff Development / Professional Development
    • Participate, if required, in any scheme of staff development and performance review.
    • Review methods of teaching and programmes of work.
    • Participate in arrangements for further training and professional development.
    • Advise and cooperate with the principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, programmes, methods of teaching and assessment, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Discipline / Health and Safety
    • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils, safeguarding their health and safety both on the school premises and during authorised school activities elsewhere.
    • Participate in meetings at the school which relate to the curriculum, administration or organisation of the school, including pastoral arrangements.
  • Public Examinations
    • Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations.
    • Assess pupils for the purposes of such examinations and record and report assessments.
    • Participate in arrangements for pupils’ presentation and supervision during examination.
  • Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration
    • Contribute to the selection, appointment and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
    • Coordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
    • Participate in review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions.
    • Participate in administrative and organisational tasks related to these duties, including the management or supervision of support staff and ordering or allocation of equipment and materials.
    • Attend assemblies (subject to Article 22 of the Order).
    • Register attendance of pupils and supervise pupils, whether duties performed before, during or after school sessions.
  • Number of Days/Hours of Work
    • A full‑time teacher (other than a teacher employed in a residential establishment) shall be available for work on 195 days in any year, no more than 190 days involving classroom teaching.
    • A teacher (other than a teacher in a residential establishment) shall be available at such times and places as may be reasonably required by the Principal, and may be required to work up to 1,265 hours in…
