Job Title: Cover Tutor - Functional Skills Maths & English
Location: HMP Brixton (London, SW2)
Salary: From 30,000 + 5,000 London Weighting per annum
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
The OpportunityAre you a passionate Maths or English educator looking for a dynamic teaching role where your work genuinely changes lives? Do you want to support adult learners on their rehabilitation journey by giving them the core functional skills needed for employment and life beyond custody?
We are recruiting for an inspiring Cover Tutor for Functional Skills Maths & English to join the education team on-site at HMP Brixton. In this high-impact, versatile role, you will deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills qualifications from Entry Level 1 through to Level
2. Working with small class sizes (up to 12 learners), you will play a crucial role in building confidence, raising literacy and numeracy standards, and providing flexible teaching cover to ensure seamless learning continuity.
Engaging Delivery: Plan and deliver interactive, inclusive Functional Skills Maths and English sessions to small groups (up to 12 learners) across Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
Assessment & Diagnostics: Conduct initial assessments and utilize BKSB diagnostic tools to identify starting points, construct Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), and track learner progression.
Adaptive Teaching: Use innovative, practical, and digital resources to make core subjects relevant and accessible for learners with diverse educational backgrounds and additional needs.
Exam Preparation: Prepare learners for formal City & Guilds assessments and qualifications, celebrating their academic milestones and personal growth.
Enrichment &
Collaboration:
Actively promote literacy, numeracy, and reading for pleasure across the prison while collaborating with support practitioners, prison staff, and employability teams.
Academic Foundation: Level 3 qualifications in both Maths and English.
Teaching
Qualifications:
A Level 5 teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS, or equivalent) is preferred.
No Level 5 qualification? Candidates with relevant delivery experience who are willing to work towards a Level 5 qualification are fully encouraged to apply.Teaching
Experience:
Proven track record of delivering Functional Skills Maths or English qualifications with strong classroom management and lesson planning capability.Core Competencies: Excellent administrative capability (ILPs, registers, assessment logs), strong communication skills, and the resilience to teach in a secure adult environment.
Desirable Criteria: Experience with in prison education, FE, or adult learning settings, familiarity with BKSB diagnostics, knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF), or an IQA qualification.
