Help a Young Person Find Their Way Back Into Learning

Not every young person thrives in a traditional classroom. Some have experienced repeated disruption to their education. Others may be struggling with anxiety, SEND, emotional regulation, school avoidance or circumstances that mean attending a mainstream setting simply isn’t working for them right now. For these learners, successful education often starts differently. It starts with trust. With somebody taking the time to understand what has prevented them from engaging before - and finding another way forward.

Our client, a leading provider of inclusive education and alternative learning support across Brighton & Hove, is looking for experienced SEND Tutors to provide personalised education to children and young people who need a more individual approach to learning. This is a flexible, part-time opportunity paying £30-£42 per hour
, ideal for an experienced teacher or tutor who wants to use their skills in a setting where individual progress really matters.

You’ll work with children and young people who may be unable to access education successfully through a conventional classroom environment.

Some pupils may have been out of formal education for a period of time. Others may have experienced several unsuccessful placements or developed significant anxiety around school and learning.

Your first challenge isn’t always going to be getting through a lesson plan. It may be helping a young person feel comfortable enough to engage with you in the first place.

You’ll provide personalised tuition, typically working one-to-one or with very small groups, adapting education around each learner’s starting point, needs and agreed outcomes.

• Planning and delivering individualised learning sessions.
• Teaching core subjects including English and maths where appropriate.
• Adapting curriculum content around different abilities and learning needs.
• Breaking learning into manageable and achievable steps.
• Supporting pupils working towards individual targets and EHCP outcomes.
• Identifying gaps in learning caused by disrupted education.
• Rebuilding confidence and positive attitudes towards learning.
• Using different strategies to support communication and engagement.
• Supporting emotional regulation within learning sessions.
• Developing activities around a young person’s interests and strengths.
• Encouraging independence and gradually increasing engagement.
• Monitoring academic and personal progress.
• Recording outcomes and providing clear feedback.
• Working collaboratively with education professionals, families and other people involved in the learner's support.
• Adapting your approach when a particular strategy isn’t working.

In alternative education, progress can take many forms. It might be a pupil completing an English activity after previously refusing to engage. It could be a young person staying focused for longer than they managed the week before. It may be rebuilding enough confidence to start thinking about qualifications, college or returning to a more structured education environment.

Academic progress matters. But so do confidence, communication, resilience, independence and re-engagement with education. You’ll need to recognise and value both.
