Support the student. Build the confidence. Help them take their next step.

College is about more than completing a course.

Students need support to settle in, stay engaged, overcome barriers and plan what comes next. Sometimes they need encouragement. Sometimes they need structure. Sometimes they need someone who will notice when things are starting to slip and help them get back on track.

As our Specialised Personal Tutor, you'll be part of the Skills Academy team, supporting students throughout their college journey in Construction disciplines.

You’ll deliver tutorial sessions, build strong relationships with students and provide tailored support that helps them achieve their academic, personal and employability goals. You’ll use college systems to monitor progress, identify concerns and put interventions in place.

This is a role for someone who can combine warmth with clear expectations. You’ll help students feel supported, but you’ll also help them understand the habits, behaviours and choices that lead to success.

What you’ll do
  • Deliver engaging tutorial sessions that support personal development, wellbeing and progression.
  • Build positive relationships with students and help them stay on track.
  • Support students to overcome barriers to learning and engagement.
  • Monitor progress, engagement and support needs using college systems.
  • Identify concerns early and put appropriate interventions in place.
  • Work with curriculum teams and support services to make sure students get the right help.
  • Support students to explore progression routes, including further study, apprenticeships, employment and higher education.
  • Help students develop confidence, employability skills and positive learning habits.
  • Maintain accurate records of support, actions and follow-up.
  • Work with parents, carers and colleagues where appropriate.
What you’ll bring
  • GCSE English and maths at Grade C/4 or equivalent.
  • A Level 3 qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience working with young people or students in an education, training, pastoral, youth work, coaching or mentoring setting.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Good organisation and the ability to manage a varied student support workload.
  • Confidence delivering tutorial or group support activity.
  • An understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A qualification in education, youth work, coaching or mentoring would be helpful.
  • Safeguarding, wellbeing, teaching or training experience would be an advantage.
What you’re like
  • Student-focused. You care about helping students succeed and progress.
  • Encouraging. You help students build confidence and see what is possible.
  • Clear. You explain expectations and next steps in a way students understand.
  • Supportive. You build trust while keeping professional boundaries.
  • Proactive. You spot concerns early and take action.
  • Organised. You keep records, actions and follow-up under control.
  • Collaborative. You work well with curriculum teams, support colleagues and families.
  • Inclusive. You want every student to feel they belong and can achieve.
Essentials
  • You’ll need an enhanced DBS check. If you get the job, we’ll do this for you.
  • You’re committed to safeguarding and inclusion.
  • You can travel across college sites when required.
  • You’re flexible and willing to work occasional evenings, weekends or bank holidays when college activity requires it.
  • You’re willing to undertake continued professional development.
