The Welding/NDT Field Engineer is responsible for quality surveillance of mechanical construction activities on a nuclear construction project, ensuring contractor works comply with approved technical requirements, specifications, and quality control plans. The role covers fabrication, installation, and assembly of piping systems, equipment, and supports within a nuclear environment. Working within the Site Quality Surveillance Team, the engineer provides independent verification of work quality, identifies and reports non‑conformances, and ensures issues are managed through formal processes.
The role requires close coordination with site teams and contractors to support safe, compliant, and high-quality delivery of works, while contributing to performance monitoring and continuous improvement.
- Perform on‑site quality surveillance of mechanical construction activities in a nuclear environment.
- Verify works comply with drawings, specifications, ITPs, and Quality Control Plans.
- Inspect fabrication, installation, and assembly of piping systems, equipment, and supports.
- Identify, report, and track non‑conformances and deviations.
- Review Quality Inspection Records prior to work being covered up.
- Monitor contractor performance and contribute to quality KPIs.
- Maintain accurate surveillance records and site diaries.
- Liaise with contractors and site teams to resolve quality issues.
- Support early identification and mitigation of potential quality risks.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and nuclear quality standards.
- HNC/HND or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Welding, Materials, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- CSWIP Welding Inspector (3.1 or equivalent).
- Experience in welding inspection, mechanical construction, or quality surveillance on large industrial projects.
- Knowledge of fabrication, welding, NDT principles, and mechanical installation activities.
- Familiarity with relevant standards (e.g. BS EN, ASME, RCC‑M) and quality systems (ITPs, QCPs, NCRs).
- Experience working with quality documentation and reporting in construction environments.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify defects and non‑conformances.
- Good communication and reporting skills within contractor‑led site environments.
- Experience in nuclear or other highly regulated environments advantageous.
