Cal Mac Ferries Limited is looking for a skilled and motivated Ro-Ro Engineer to join our Shore Support Ro-Ro Engineering team.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a hands-on role in supporting the safe, reliable and compliant operation of Ro-Ro cargo handling systems across Cal Mac's fleet of Major and Small Vessels. Working alongside vessel crews, shore-based colleagues and external contractors, you will help maintain and improve the equipment that is essential to Scotland's lifeline ferry services.
The role offers a varied and rewarding working environment, including onboard vessels, within our workshop facilities, and at ship repair yards.
What You'll Do
- Carry out maintenance, repair and fault-finding activities on Ro-Ro equipment and associated systems.
- Support the safe and reliable operation of mechanical, hydraulic and control systems across the fleet.
- Deliver planned and reactive engineering work onboard vessels, in workshops and at repair facilities.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with the Shore Support Works Management Process.
- Contribute to vessel reliability and availability through timely defect diagnosis and resolution.
- Follow approved risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
- Maintain accurate records, reports and technical documentation.
- Support investigations into equipment failures and recommend corrective actions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, reliability and efficiency.
- Work collaboratively with vessel personnel, Fleet Groups and contractors.
What We're Looking For
You will be a practical and safety-focused engineer who enjoys solving technical problems and working as part of a professional engineering team.
Essential
- Engineering qualification in a relevant discipline (Mechanical, Marine, Electrical or equivalent).
- Experience working on cargo handling equipment, or large-scale mechanical, hydraulic or control systems.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Good understanding of engineering safety practices and safe systems of work.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, manuals and engineering documentation.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Experience working with Ro-Ro systems or cargo handling equipment.
- Experience with in the maritime, shipping, offshore or heavy engineering sectors.
- Knowledge of marine Class and statutory requirements.
- Experience working in workshop and field-service environments.
- Familiarity with maintenance and works management systems.
Working arrangements
The role is based in Gourock and is nominally worked on weekdays. Arrangements will also be required for evening, night and weekend working to support vessels in remaining in, or returning to, service.
Travel across the Cal Mac network and to vessels and ship repair yards is required.
