The role

As AMP’s Principal Automation, Controls & SCADA Engineer, you will be our in‑house technical authority for controls across our battery, power generation and heat portfolio. This is a hands‑on principal engineering role where you will shape how our control systems are designed, standardised, assured and improved – making sure they are safe, compliant, reliable and practical for the teams who operate them every day.

role will involve
  • Owning and evolving AMP’s systems and controls standards and compliance framework, creating a consistent approach across the asset portfolio.
  • Leading the design, specification and standardisation of control system architectures for new and existing assets, including integration with SCADA, BMS and third‑party systems.
  • Providing technical assurance through design, procurement, construction and commissioning, challenging suppliers and OEM solutions where needed.
  • Bringing practical field experience to commissioning, witness testing, complex fault investigation and troubleshooting, ensuring systems are operable, maintainable and aligned with design intent.
  • Benchmarking existing control systems and shaping the long‑term controls strategy across software, hardware, coding standards and control philosophies to improve asset performance.
  • Acting as a trusted technical leader across Engineering, Operations and Maintenance, sharing knowledge, coaching colleagues and supporting clear, value‑driven decisions.
What we are looking for

A technically strong and credible controls engineer who can combine strategic thinking with practical field experience. You will be comfortable setting standards at portfolio level, challenging designs and suppliers, and getting close to the detail when a system needs to be commissioned, investigated or improved. You will bring:

  • An Engineering degree or equivalent in Electrical, Control or Instrumentation, together with at least five years’ relevant discipline engineering experience.
  • Strong practical experience of control and instrumentation systems, including design, commissioning, fault finding, rectification and maintenance in an operational environment.
  • Experience defining or standardising control system architectures, platforms, coding approaches and control philosophies across multiple assets or sites.
  • Good experience integrating control systems with SCADA, BMS, third‑party platforms and remote monitoring systems, with the technical judgement to challenge OEM and supplier solutions.
  • Experience developing, implementing or governing engineering standards, procedures, compliance frameworks and assurance processes – with an understanding of how good governance supports safe, maintainable assets.
  • A broad understanding of LV electrical systems and safe systems of work, including permits, method statements and risk assessments, plus the ability to work effectively with engineering, operations, maintenance and project teams.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to act as a technical authority, coach colleagues and translate complex controls issues into clear, practical decisions.
