Design Engineer / Draughtsperson

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Design Engineer / Draughtsperson to join an established engineering and manufacturing business.

The successful candidate will be responsible for producing accurate engineering drawings and technical documentation, supporting manufacturing operations, and working closely with colleagues across design, production and other business functions.

This is a hands-on role that requires a practical understanding of engineering principles, manufacturing processes and the importance of designing products that are accurate, efficient and suitable for production.

Candidates should have a relevant technical background, appropriate qualifications and experience within a mechanical engineering environment. Experience involving mechanical components, fabricated assemblies, castings or machinery would be advantageous.

Familiarity with AutoCAD LT or equivalent CAD software, together with 3D modelling software such as Solid Works, is desirable. Competence in Microsoft Office applications is also required.

Key Responsibilities

* Produce accurate 2D and 3D engineering drawings and technical documentation to support manufacturing and assembly activities.

* Prepare general arrangement drawings and detailed designs in accordance with project specifications and customer requirements.

* Create and maintain parts information and bills of materials within the company's business management system.

* Review drawings and designs to ensure accuracy, manufacturability and compliance with applicable engineering standards.

* Amend and update existing drawings, models and technical documentation, ensuring records remain accurate and current.

* Liaise with customers, suppliers and internal teams to clarify technical requirements and resolve engineering issues.

* Maintain effective control of engineering drawings, CAD models and associated documentation.

* Support the development and improvement of existing products, components and manufacturing processes.

* Provide technical support to colleagues across relevant business functions.

* Work collaboratively with manufacturing personnel to ensure designs reflect practical production requirements.

* Ensure all work complies with applicable health and safety requirements, quality standards and internal procedures.

Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate:

* A relevant technical qualification or equivalent practical experience in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.

* Experience producing engineering drawings and technical documentation.

* Knowledge of mechanical design principles and manufacturing methods.

* Familiarity with 2D CAD software, such as AutoCAD LT or an equivalent package.

* Experience using 3D CAD software, preferably Solid Works or a similar system.

* The ability to interpret technical specifications and translate requirements into accurate engineering designs.

* Competence in Microsoft Office applications.

* Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy working environment.

* Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

* A methodical approach to work, with strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality outputs.

Personal Attributes

We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, proactive and committed to maintaining high standards of work.

The ideal candidate will be practical and solutions-focused, with the ability to identify problems, assess options and develop effective solutions.

You should be comfortable working independently while contributing positively to a wider team. Flexibility, adaptability and a willingness to consider new ideas and approaches are important.

A positive attitude, a collaborative working style and a commitment to continuous improvement will be essential to success in this role
