Police Constable AFO Dounreay - 2025

Join Civil Nuclear Constabulary, an armed police service dedicated to protecting the nuclear industry. Our vision is to be recognised nationally and internationally as the United Kingdom’s leading organisation for the provision of protective policing for the civil nuclear industry and other critical national infrastructure.

As a CNC Police Officer you will become part of a highly trained, well‑disciplined, professional team operating from our Operational Units. Your duties include 24/7 armed response, patrolling and protecting nuclear sites, facilities and materials, and working alongside local Home Office Police Forces. You will also support the Strategic Armed Policing Reserve and may be deployed as part of Operation Temperer.

All recruits undertake a 19‑week residential Initial Foundation Programme (IFP) that includes world‑class Authorised Firearms training. Prior policing experience is not required.

We understand that for local candidates the distance to training can be a barrier. CNC offers at least one local course each year, held exclusively in Caithness (except for the first week, which takes place in Oxfordshire). Our recruitment team will discuss your preference for a local course and will note this in your application.

After a 2‑year probationary period you become eligible to apply for specialist roles such as Dog Handler, Special Branch, Firearms Instructor or Strategic Escort Group Officer.

Police officers are expected to display the highest standards, values and professional qualities at all times. The CNC Code of Ethics applies to all officers and sets out the principles and standards of behaviour we expect.

Applicants must be 18 years old and hold a full manual driving licence.

Benefits of Working for the CNC
  • 200 hours annual leave per year, plus bank holidays – increasing to 208 hours after 6 years, 216 hours after 7 years, 224 hours after 8 years, 232 hours after 9 years and up to 240 hours after ten years.
  • Generous pension scheme – 8.2% personal contribution and 20.7% employer contribution (on the starting salary this is approximately £750.53 per month).
  • Starting salary for a Police Constable: £31,164, increasing to £32,472 after successful completion of the 2‑year probation. Subsequent pay points allow you to reach the highest pay point for Police Constables (£50,256) within 7 years of joining.
  • Free parking at all sites.
  • Free gym access at some sites.
  • Enhanced family‑friendly and wellbeing policies, including paid parental and adoption leave, and shared parental leave.
  • Cycle‑to‑Work scheme.
  • Opportunity to join the national Blue Light Card scheme, offering discounts on a variety of products and services for emergency services, NHS and Armed Forces personnel.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion are central to the values of our organisation. At the CNC we value and embrace the unique experiences, identities and abilities that each of us bring to our roles, and we strive to empower everyone to bring their authentic selves openly and safely to work.
