Scrutiny and Standards Officer
Please note that the advertised salary for this position is subject to the pending 2026/2027 national pay award. The final salary will be adjusted accordingly once this has been agreed.
We are looking to recruit a Scrutiny and Standards Officer to join our Democratic Services team.
The role will assist with the provision of support and advice in relation to the Council’s overview and scrutiny functions, supporting Elected Members, committee chairs, officers and others to ensure effective scrutiny arrangements. The post will also support the training and development programme for Members, promote the Council’s democratic processes, and assist the Monitoring Officer with functions relating to the Ethics and Standards Committee.
You will organise, coordinate and support scrutiny work, including preparing and publishing agendas, coordinating actions, assisting with reviews, preparing reports, providing advice on governance procedures, and working with a wide range of stakeholders in a politically sensitive environment.
We are looking for an individual with a degree, equivalent qualification or experience relevant to the role, together with experience of working in local government, the public sector or another complex multi-function organisation. You will need excellent communication skills, the ability to work with limited supervision, good analytical skills, resilience, professionalism and sound political awareness.
The successful candidate will need to interpret and apply the Council’s Constitution, relevant legislation and statutory guidance, as well as use sound ICT skills in day-to-day work.
This is a permanent, full-time post of 37 hours per week, Grade 9, with a salary of £35,412 – £37,280. The post is based in Penmorfa, Aberaeron with a hybrid workstyle.
Welsh language skills are essential for this post: ALTE Level 5 for listening and speaking, and Level 4 for reading and writing.
