Data Protection Assistant (Part-Time)

Hours:
2 days per week, with an additional hours during busy periods as required. Hours can be worked flexibly, although occasional availability during normal office hours will be required for team communications.
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Data Protection Assistant to support the Council's data protection responsibilities. This is a hands‑on role that will act as the primary liaison with the Council's Data Protection Officer (DPO), providing advice and support regarding potential data protection complaints, breaches, and GDPR compliance matters.
The successful candidate will play a key role in managing Subject Access Requests (SARs), ensuring requests are logged, allocated, processed, and prepared for release in accordance with GDPR requirements.
Key Responsibilities- Act as the primary point of contact between the Council and the Data Protection Officer (DPO).
- Provide advice and guidance on potential data protection complaints, breaches, and GDPR‑related matters.
- Manage the end‑to‑end administration of Subject Access Requests (SARs), including:
- Logging requests.
- Allocating requests to relevant departments.
- Monitoring progress and deadlines.
- Reviewing and processing responses prior to release.
- Support compliance with GDPR, Data Protection legislation, and Council policies.
- Assist in the investigation and reporting of data breaches and information security incidents.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation relating to data protection activities.
- Work collaboratively with departments across the Council to ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
To be successful in this role, you must have:
- Proven experience in a Data Protection and GDPR-focused role, ideally within Local Government.
- A good working knowledge of:
- Data Protection legislation and GDPR.
- The Data Protection Act.
- Information Security principles and standards, including BS7799.
- Experience managing Subject Access Requests and handling confidential information.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet statutory deadlines.
