Job Introduction

Employment DetailsBand 6 Speech and Language Therapist – part‑time role, 22.5 hours per week.
Main Responsibilities- Assessment and differential diagnosis of a child’s communication difficulties using standardised assessments and informal observation.
- Apply highly developed auditory and perceptual skills to support therapy sessions.
- Handle children with disabilities, including performing oral examinations.
- Use specialist knowledge to inform sound clinical judgement and case management decisions.
- Identify and implement strategies to enhance communicative effectiveness; develop clear, evidence‑based treatment plans and evaluate outcomes.
- Produce clinical reports summarising care plans for parents, carers, school staff, healthcare professionals and local education authorities.
- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent.
- Health Professions Council licence to practice.
- Knowledge and experience working with children with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.
- Knowledge of a range of therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group and ability to compare relative benefits.
- Understanding of the roles of other professionals relevant to the client group.
- Knowledge of standards of record keeping.
- Excellent interpersonal skills – observation, listening and empathy.
- Negotiation and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent diplomacy skills.
- Demonstrates excellent analytical and reflective skills.
- Ability to be a good team member and work with other agencies.
- Well‑developed concentration skills.
- Excellent presentation skills, both written and verbal.
- Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills.
- Good auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically.
- Experience working with children with speech, language and communication difficulties as an undergraduate.
- Experience developing relationships with staff from other agencies and management teams.
- Knowledge of Makaton.
- Experience working within mainstream and/or specialist provision.
- Experience delivering training.
- Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy.
- Membership of relevant Special Interest Groups.
