Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Microbiology
Overview
The post holder will act as a registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist in all sections of microbiology (parasitology, mycology and bacteriology), who scientifically analyses clinical specimens, interprets results and generates reports to aid clinicians in diagnosing disease and determining presence or absence of infection or colonisation.
Qualifications- HCPC registration.
- Hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
- Extensive post registration experience in a routine diagnostic microbiology laboratory.
- Provide log book or IBMS Specialist Portfolio completion date.
Applicants pending an IBMS Specialist Portfolio, or currently completing a Diploma in Microbiology, may be considered. Successful candidates will start at AfC Band 5 until the diploma is assessed, after which the post will be paid at AfC Band 6; please detail your status.
Position DetailsWe are recruiting one 37.5‑hour and one 30‑hour week post. A bank role may be offered for unsuccessful substantive candidates.
Successful applicants must be conscientious, enthusiastic, work well as part of a team, and will be based in the Bacteriology department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
Diagnostic WorkThe department examines urine, faeces, sputum, pus, blood and other fluids and tissues using microscopy and culture for bacteria and fungi. It participates in mandatory surveillance schemes for MRSA and other healthcare‑associated infections, infection control, and handles specimens that may be involved in medico‑legal proceedings. Environmental work includes testing water and other environmental samples from Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and West Kent.
The laboratories operate at a minimum of Containment Level 2, and have Containment Level 3 facilities for work with Hazard Group 3 agents.
Investigative TechniquesThe post holder will undertake a range of complex investigations, including manual, semi‑automated and automated techniques on specialised analytical equipment.
Professional DevelopmentMaintaining professional registration is required, demonstrating high standards of knowledge and competency through personal continuing professional development. The post holder may also participate in training and developing other staff.
Working HoursCore hours are 8:30‑17:00, with a late shift of 11:00‑19:00. Saturday, Sunday, Bank Holidays and on‑call work are mandatory.
