Overview

We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Neuropsychiatrist to work at Cygnet Afon Las, providing senior medical cover within our neurocognitive service for men. The service is brand-new and scheduled to open in early 2027 in Corwen, Denbighshire. It will provide a 15-bed neurocognitive service for men with complex needs, accepting referrals from the community and from neurosurgical and neurorehabilitation services, delivering a clear pathway for assessment, treatment and recovery.

duties and Responsibilities
  • Act as the Responsible Clinician and oversee the care of all ward inpatients as required.
  • Audit medical services rendered at the ward and ensure high quality in accordance with GMC standards and other professional guidelines.
  • Lead the multidisciplinary team in delivering life-changing treatment, supported by a Specialty Doctor, qualified nurses, psychologist and occupational therapist.
  • Progress to Medical Director level through management schemes where applicable.
  • Lead on high-quality care provision to service users admitted to Cygnet Afon Las.
  • Act as a positive role model, communicating effectively with patients, families, visitors and staff.
  • Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Assess referrals and undertake mental state examinations of service users.
  • Undertake appropriate investigations, diagnosis and treatment; conduct ward rounds, patient reviews and clinical audits.
  • Lead risk assessment and risk management and embed clinical governance within the service.
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and managers hearings, and attend hearings as required.
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for transfer of patients and approval of leave as required.
  • Maintain high-quality patient records and ensure regular communications with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff, directors and other concerned bodies; maintain appropriate reports.
  • Attend and contribute to academic meetings and adhere to GMC, Department of Health and Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD standards.
  • Contribute to the Telephone On-call rota.

Requirements
  • Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified.
  • Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC Status.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in Neuropsychiatry / Neurocognition.
  • Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity.
  • Strong communication skills to interview, assess and treat patients and produce clear, comprehensive medical notes.
  • Committed to continuing professional development.
  • Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent.
