The Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Payroll Analyst to join our team on a fixed‑term basis, covering maternity leave. This role is based at our National Hub in Crick, Northamptonshire, with the flexibility of hybrid working arrangements. The successful candidate will support the Payroll Manager in managing payroll processes, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements, and maintaining the accuracy and timeliness of payroll outputs.

This position is ideal for a professional with a strong background in payroll operations who can handle multiple payrolls simultaneously while providing expert advice and ensuring continuous improvement of payroll systems and procedures. The role involves working closely with internal teams and external agencies such as HMRC and DWP, to deliver a professional payroll service and support ongoing payroll projects and system upgrades.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 3–5 years of experience working in a payroll environment, including end‑to‑end payroll processing and third‑party service provision. Fully qualified with the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) or an equivalent qualification is preferred. Candidates should have a strong understanding of payroll systems such as ADP Global View or SAP, along with up‑to‑date knowledge of HMRC guidance and legislative requirements.

Proficiency in payroll rules, regulations and occupational pension schemes is essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate excellent project management skills, the ability to manage long‑term initiatives, and outstanding customer service capabilities. Intermediate proficiency in Excel is required, with a proactive approach to process improvements and compliance management.

Responsibilities

The Senior Payroll Analyst will be responsible for a range of duties, including acting as the primary escalation point for complex payroll issues, legislative or system‑related challenges, and ensuring the delivery of a professional payroll service. The role involves overseeing manual calculations for statutory payments such as SMP, SPP, SAP and SHPP, and ensuring legislative compliance and accuracy. The analyst will reconcile complex month‑end and year‑end processes, including statutory returns and HMRC PAYE accounts, ensuring all submissions are accurate and timely.

Managing pension contribution reconciliations and liaising with pension providers is also part of the role. Planning and implementing legislative, procedural and system changes in collaboration with the Payroll Manager is critical to maintaining compliance and operational efficiency. The role includes assisting in training new staff, updating current team members on legislative changes and correcting any infringements related to the National Minimum Wage.

The analyst will anticipate the impact of upcoming legislation, plan testing for system upgrades and identify potential work practice adjustments. Resolving payment errors, out‑of‑balance accounts and queries to ensure accurate payroll processing is a key responsibility. The role also involves liaising with external agencies such as HMRC and DWP on complex payroll matters, providing subject‑matter expertise on TUPE transfers and supporting the development of payroll contingency plans and process improvements.
