Environmental Waste Operative

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver a daily waste collection service
• Liaise with staff to support service delivery
• Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with Trust policies
• Ensure waste is segregated correctly
• Ensure that all day‑to‑day tasks are completed at the end of the shift
• Always follow correct procedures
• Ensure that standards and response times are met and, if necessary, update supervisor with reasons for delay
• Participate in all training to ensure competency in all aspects of the role on waste
• Drive the tug and trailer, ensuring the daily vehicle checks are undertaken
• Operate machinery, including compactor, following manufacturer instructions
• Notify Supervisor/Waste Manager / Estates manager on call of a major incident situation
• Collect and deliver emergency waste bins
• Complete incident forms and maintain accurate record keeping
• Report any defective machinery to the estates help‑line
• Ensure uniform is worn whilst on duty,  is visible and presentation is of the highest quality
• Communicate effectively with all levels of staff and users of the service
• Ensure compound area is clean, tidy and secure at the end of each shift
• The post holder may be requested to undertake other duties to ensure adequate provision of service
• Job description may be subject to change according to the varying needs of the service; such changes will be made after discussion between the post holder and the Job description

• Level 1 literacy
• Level 3 numeracy

• Full driving licence

• Working with the public
• Experience in waste services
• Experience in healthcare environment
• Previous portering experience in a similar setting
