Job overviewThe Neurosurgical Team has recently expanded and is located in Brighton. We offer a full range of Neurosurgical and Neurovascular services and also support poly trauma.
This 32‑bedbeded ward cares for a wide range of patients requiring brain and spinal surgery, as well as ENT and Maxillo‑facial surgery. It is an extremely busy and dynamic environment.
Main duties of the jobTo support the ward manager in providing effective clinical leadership that ensures quality patient care, good communication, safe and efficient service management and facilitates staff development.
- Act as a role model and expert practitioner.
- Assume delegated responsibility in the absence of the ward manager.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities- Be a visible and accessible presence on the ward for staff, patients and relatives.
- Provide expert leadership and act as a positive role model for the specified patient group.
- Acknowledge own clinical limitations and refer out of scope issues; seek training to overcome deficiencies.
- Complete training in venepuncture, cannulation and intravenous therapy and become an assessor for staff.
- Lead, with the Ward Manager, on assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care; ensure individualized, evidence‑based care plans.
- Support regular review of documentation practices and develop action plans for identified concerns.
- Plan admissions, transfers and discharges in accordance with Trust policy and liaise with partner agencies.

Experience / Qualifications- Neurosurgery experience.
- Registered General Nurse (RGN).
- Substantial experience in a staff nurse role (Band
5) managing shifts in a relevant specialty. - Evidence of mentoring student and post‑registration nurses.
- Evidence of recent professional development.
- Post‑registration course relevant to the specialty (e.g. Care for the Neurological Patient).
- Working towards or completion of a recognised course leading to qualification in teaching and assessing.
- Surgical experience.
- Evidence of participation in recognised leadership/management programme.
- Evidence of undertaking development to improve understanding of equalities issues.
- Evidence of championing diversity in previous roles.
